The IRC works to increase access to fresh, affordable foods among San Diego’s refugee and low-income communities. Many refugees come from farming backgrounds and cultures that celebrate fresh, made-from-scratch food. We provide information and resources that will help them navigate the overwhelming and often unhealthy food options they encounter in the United States. We also support community-driven initiatives that celebrate culinary diversity and promote healthful eating.

Current projects include:

• Working with IRC’s Students Plus program to build a school garden and facilitate food-literacy and leadership development through Crawford High School’s Gardening and Food Justice Team
• Partnering with refugees and local community groups to build an “urban farm” in City Heights
• Giving refugees a free bag of fresh produce and staples each month
• Conducting community outreach to increase participation in food stamp program
• Offering technical assistance, start-up grants, graphic design assistance, etc. to help refugees establish and expand food businesses
