To become self-sufficient, refugees need to learn sound money management skills and how to use credit judiciously. The IRC’s financial literacy program, launched in 2006, familiarizes them  with U.S. banking and credit systems and helps them use their savings and credit to build assets. We offer classroom training, one-on-one counseling, and opportunities to build a credit history.  We also work with banks to connect refugees with safe, low-cost financial services.  We have helped refugees open bank accounts, increase savings, pay down debt and build sound credit.

We provide:

  • Basic, intermediate and advanced classroom training in nine languages
  • One-on-one assistance with:
         Opening and managing bank accounts
Making bill payments over the phone and online
         Reviewing credit reports
         Resolving credit and billing disputes
  • Zero-interest credit-building loans
  • Free tax preparation
