How You Can Help Refugees in New York City

Donate

Refugees come to the United States with only a couple of suitcases and quickly find New York to be a very expensive place.  Your contribution will provide critical aid to refugees while they seek their first jobs in New York City, like rent payments, clothing for work, food and the many other expenses refugees are faced with every day.  Of every $1 the IRC spends, 90 cents goes directly to our programs and services that directly benefit refugees.  Donate now using our secure donation form by clicking on "Donate" on the right side of this screen.

Volunteer

None of our work would be possible without dedicated volunteers.  All volunteers receive orientations and ongoing support from IRC staff.  We have volunteer opportunities at our resettlement offices in midtown Manhattan and Linden, New Jersey and in refugees’ homes in New York City and northern New Jersey.  To learn more about volunteering, click here.

Donate Your Computer, Furniture or Car

Due to limited space constraints, we are no longer accepting donations of used clothing of any kind.  Computers, furniture and other items will be accepted on an as-needed basis.  Please send an email to NewYork@theIRC.org with your name and the item you would like to donate and IRC staff will let you know whether we are able to accept your donation at this time.  Our deepest gratitude goes out to everyone who has donated in the past!

Become a Part of our Emergency Translation Roster

The IRC matches foreign language interpreters with refugees who need assistance with translation.  Volunteer interpreters translate for refugees who have appointments at IRC or accompany refugees to appointments at clinics and hospitals, schools, and courts.  To join the roster, please send an email to NewYork@theIRC.org with your name, the language(s) you speak, and availability.  We are especially in need of translators who speak Albanian, Arabic, Burmese, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, and Ukrainian.

Employ Refugees

Refugees come seeking safety, and those selected by our government to begin new lives in the U.S. don’t make it here without showing remarkable skill and strength. Their determination to build a better future can be your company’s advantage.  To learn more about hiring refugees, click here.
