The International Rescue Committee goes to crisis zones to rescue and rebuild. We lead refugees from harm to home.

The IRC in Baltimore

Since July 1999, the IRC Baltimore Regional Office has been one of the leading resettlement agencies in Central Maryland, resettling over 600 refugees and asylees in 2008.  We assist newly arrived refugees achieve self-sufficiency through case management services, employment services and offer English and job training courses through our partnerships.  We help refugees regain control of their lives, while enabling them to participate in their communities and maintain their rich cultural heritage.  IRC resettles refugees in 6 counties but the majority of our services are provided in Baltimore City, Howard County and Frederick.

IRC started as an initiative of the Maryland Office for Refugees and Asylees and we work in partnership with Baltimore City Community College, Baltimore Department of Social Services, Lutheran Social Services, Jewish Community Services and Baltimore Medical Systems to provide refugees with a unique opportunity to receive comprehensive resettlement services at one location during their transition period.

"Kitchen Stories"

The Library Art Gallery and Art on Purpose are featuring a new exhibition entitled "Kitchen Stories", with works by local Baltimore artist Julie Lin, as well as art and recipes from immigrants worldwide and from IRC refugee clients from Iraq and Bhutan.  The exhibition is free and open to the public.  The exhibition runs from June 20th to July 25th, with gallery hours each Saturday from 12:00pm-4:00pm (except July 4th).

The Morton & Sophia Macht Foundation, a generous supporter of IRC Baltimore, recently gave a grant of $10,000 to support resettlement efforts and the housing crisis fund.  With these funds, more families will receive the assistance they need to prevent eviction.

On June 15th, the IRC screened the documentary "Rising Up: The Alams" as part of our World Refugee Day celebration in Baltimore.
