Resettlement Services

The Resettlement Services Program is funded through a grant awarded to resettlement agencies from the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration to provide resettlement services.  Under a cooperative agreement this program provides core services to refugees who are assigned to our office.  Case managers provide initial services to orient newly arrived refugees to life in the U.S., including (but not limited to) securing housing, addressing medical concerns, applying for Social Security and Georgia ID cards, and linking refugees to our internal services and mainstream services.

Core Services
IRC’s main function is to arrange or provide a set of Core Services to our clients within their first 30 days in the United States.  These core services vary depending upon whether the refugee is a free case or an anchor case.  They include:

  • Finding housing for free cases and confirming housing for anchor cases.
  • Providing free cases with furniture and basic supplies.
  • Airport pick-up for direct cases and arranging airport pick-up for anchor cases.
  • Offering orientation sessions for all arrivals.
  • Assisting with or arranging Social Security applications.
  • Assisting with or arranging for Food Stamps, Cash Assistance (Welfare), and Medicaid applications.
  • Providing MARTA orientation for free cases.
  • Arranging School Immunization and School Registration.
  • Arranging Health Screenings.
  • Assisting or referring for employment.
  • Providing information on BCIS paperwork and family reunion procedures
  • Providing referral services to ESL classes for adults.

Asylees
Asylees share the same legal definition as refugees, but status is conferred once the person arrives in the U.S. or at a U.S. border. Under the Matching grant program we assist Asylees as well.

Asylees are eligible for refugee assistance and services beginning on the date that they are granted asylum. Asylees are eligible for all government programs and must apply within their first 30 days of their asylum . Asylees will be eligible for the entire refugee program but NOT the Placement and Resettlement assistance that refugees get from the date of entry as mentioned earlier. Asylees are also eligible to file family reunification petitions. An Asylees entry date will be the date that the individual is granted asylum in the United States . Please contact the R&P staff for more information about the services we provide to asylees.
