Voices From the Field

The IRC in Central African Republic

Violence, malnutrition and disease are threatening tens of thousands of people in the north of Central African Republic.

The fighting in the northwest pits the army against rebels seeking to oust the government.  Civilians are caught in the middle.  Villages are being attacked, looted and burned. Residents are fleeing to the bush for safety where they have little or no shelter, protection, food, clean water and health care.  Malnutrition rates are rising and people are succumbing to preventable and treatable disease.

How We Help

The IRC has launched emergency assistance for displaced and other vulnerable people in the violence-torn northwest of Central African Republic.

The IRC team is working to improve, revive and expand health care for some 50,000 people in Nana-Gribizi district.  The services are provided at no cost to ensure that the neediest receive proper care.  The team is digging wells and rehabilitating other water sources to increase access to clean water and distribute hygiene and other emergency items to displaced families.

The IRC also recently launched new programs in the fields of protection, gender-based violence and education to enable displaced communities in northern CAR to continue their lives with safety and dignity.
