The International Rescue Committee operates programs in northern Sudan (GOS-controlled) and in southern Sudan, as well as in the northeast. We are committed to building strong foundations for peace and development by facilitating durable solutions for IDPs, returnees, and war-affected communities. To decrease vulnerability and encourage recovery, IRC is working closely with beneficiaries and partners, implementing peace building and protection activities and mobilizing communities to build local capacity and civil structures, as well as responding to ongoing health, shelter, and water/sanitation needs.
North Sudan (operating from Khartoum since 1981) Programs managed from Khartoum currently operate in 12 regions of Sudan: Khartoum state; the garrison towns of Wau, Raja, Aweil, and Gogrial in Bahr-el-Ghazal; northern Upper Nile State; government- and opposition-held areas of Nuba Mountains (South and West Kordofan); Red Sea state; Kassala state; Gadaref state; Bahr-el-Jebel state; and, in a major response to the current emergency, North, South, and West Darfur. Programs:

South/Northeast Sudan (operating from Nairobi, Kenya since 1989) Programs and Locations:
- Primary Health Care: Bahr Al Ghazal (Aweils), Lakes (Rumbek, Billing), Ganyliel
- Youth Programming and Vocational Skills: Bahr Al Ghazal (Aweils)
- HIV/AIDs: Bahr Al Ghazal (Rumbek and Aweils)
- Health capacity‐building and training: Jongli (Ganyiel), Equatoria
- Water/Sanitation: North East Sudan
- Civil Society Empowerment: multiple sites
Building a Unified Sudan Program Since 2003, IRC has been building a unified Sudan program through joint funding, programming, advocacy and peace planning. Some of the initiatives IRC’s respective Sudan programs have undertaken together are:
1. Civil Society Empowerment program (began in February 2004, funded by DFID) 2. Protection assessment (conducted in March 2004) and joint protection/rule of law program development 3. Coordination for reintegration and return (ongoing) 4. Member of Sudan Advocacy Coalition (counterparts in North and South, ongoing)
