The IRC in Azerbaijan

The International Rescue Committee has provided relief and development assistance for internally displaced persons and war-affected communities in Azerbaijan since 1994. After 1998, we shifted our emphasis to projects intended to help communities, municipalities and local aid groups work together. The IRC's long-term goal is to help communities find sustainable solutions to local problems.

How We Help

The IRC has helped over 100 community leadership groups (representing more than 570,000 residents), 70 municipalities and 12 national aid organization partners in 18 regions in Azerbaijan to identify and address local economic, health, agriculture, infrastructure and social concerns. To promote economic development, for example, the IRC launched eight marketing centers to assist entrepreneurs. To encourage local agriculture, the IRC initiated the formation of a production and processing system that serves nine regions. In addition, the IRC has assisted over 15,000 displaced persons to improve their living conditions and livelihood opportunities by increasing access to improved shelter, water and sanitation, and by increasing food security and incomes through enhanced agriculture techniques.
