Education is still under threat

Education requires far more than just rebuilding Afghanistan’s schools, but more than 1/2 of them have been destroyed

  • Most classes are now held in tents and in the open air
  • Only 20% of teachers are even minimally qualified
  • There is a severe shortage of books and supplies; texts and curriculum are terribly outdated
  • In rural areas, children have even less or no accessto nearby schools; girls face impossibility or grave threats to their safety
  • The Taliban continues to use violence and intimidation to shut down schools, to forbid women from teaching and girls from learning; there have been 450 attacks on schools and schoolchildren this year

Join the International Rescue Committee and the Afghan people to make a difference

“I was impressed by the difference that the IRC is making in the lives of Afghan refugees, especially girls and young women, by providing them with an education.”

— Madeleine K. Albright, refugee, former US Secretary of State, IRC Overseer
