The International Rescue Committee has been working in Pakistan since 1980, when large numbers of refugees entered the country from Afghanistan in the wake of the Soviet invasion. Within hours of the devastating earthquake on Oct. 8, 2005, IRC teams were on their way to the hardest hit areas to distribute emergency supplies and assist the survivors, with special emphasis on the needs of women and children. Now, IRC aid workers are helping survivors stay healthy, rebuild their homes and begin the long recovery process.
