The International Rescue Committee goes to crisis zones to rescue and rebuild. We lead refugees from harm to home.

New Beginnings. New Hope.

On World Refugee Day (June 20), join the International Rescue Committee in saluting the indomitable spirit and courage of refugees, who have been forced by terrifying circumstances to rebuild their lives far from home and loved ones.

Stories of Hope

Isiata, 31, was separated from her husband and four children when rebels attacked her village in Sierra Leone. Now resettled in Boston with IRC’s help, she hopes to bring her family together once again: “‘Mom, come be with us,’ my kids say every time we talk.”

Laurent, 17, remembers life before he was kidnapped from his Congolese village and forced to become a child soldier. “I really liked school,” he says. “I hope I can start again soon.” The IRC is helping to reunite him with his family.

Safia, 18, a star student at an IRC school for Afghan refugees, has lived in Pakistan all her life. She’s a little squeamish about dissecting frogs but hopes to become a doctor in Afghanistan. “I want to help my people because they still need so much,” she says.
