Oasis' Story - Refugee Journeys

When her parents gave their daughter a name that means a place of refuge they hardly imagined they would soon be seeking that very thing, running from the persecution they faced in their native Cuba for their political and religious beliefs. At nine, Oasis fled with them to Spain, eventually settled in Miami and became a caseworker for the International Rescue Committee, where she's since devoted her life to helping others like herself find their way on what she calls the refugee's flight of freedom.

The Timsina Family - IRC Voices

Insufficient food, substandard education and cramped living quarters were some of the obstacles faced by the Timsina family, Bhutanese refugees who had been living in a refugee camp in Nepal. When the opportunity arose to be resettled in the US, the family moved halfway around the world to begin their new life. In this week's IRC Voices, the Timsinas explain how English lessons, employment counseling and other services provided by the IRC are helping them make dramatic progress in their journey from harm to home.
