International Rescue Committee

Thanks for your interest in volunteering with us!  Many refugees find their first few months in the U.S. to be a very challenging experience, and volunteers play an important role in helping them adjust and become successful members of our community.  If you are interested in volunteering, please e-mail us at VolunteerCharlottesville@theIRC.org.

Volunteer Opportunities

ESL tutors help refugees improve their English. ESL tutors must be able to commit to at least two one-hour sessions per week (3-5 hours total), for a minimum of six months.  Tutoring takes place in the client’s home.

Family mentors help refugees acclimate and acculturate to life in the US and Charlottesville. Family mentors are matched with families or individual refugees, and serve as their “first American friend.” Time commitment for this role can vary, but averages 3-5 hours per week depending on what activities you do with your family.
