IRC Reaches Out to the Phoenix Community Through the Speakers Bureau |
19 Oct 2006 - The Phoenix office of the International Rescue Committee is pleased to offer a new service called the Speakers Bureau. The Speakers Bureau is a group of IRC staff members, volunteers and former refugees who speak about refugee issues at community events, schools, businesses, places of worship, universities and local organizations. The Speakers Bureau was created to educate the Phoenix community on refugee issues so that the community can be more informed, and therefore more receptive to refugees coming to our country and community.
Many of the speakers on the Bureau are former refugees, and they represent such diverse countries as: Burma , Iraq , Bosnia , Sudan , D.R. Congo and Laos , among others. Former refugees are often willing to tell their personal stories of misfortune and hardship, of courage and strength in the face of adversity, and above all, stories of hope. Hearing a refugee's story is an incredible opportunity to see refugees as more than statistics and images, but as real people with hopes and dreams. Presentations are available on a variety of topics and speakers are very willing to create tailored presentations to fit all interests and audiences.
If you are interested in participating in the Speakers Bureau or in hosting a Speakers Bureau event, please contact Amy Wilson by phone at (602) 433-2440 ext. 241 or by email at Amy.Wilson@theIRC.org.
