IRC Organizes Distribution of Winter Supplies to Communities in the Caucasus

10 Jan 2003 -

An internally displaced girl clutches her new blanket in Bilessuvar Camp, southern Azerbaijan.

The IRC in Azerbaijan procured thousands of blankets and mobilized teams from five settlements of displaced people in the region of Bilesuvar to distribute them to their communities. The region has been hit by record freezing temperatures unseen in over a century and most displaced families in the region lack the supplies to cope.

In Georgia meanwhile, the IRC arranged the delivery of wood-burning stoves to four schools in the Pankisi Valley that are attended by more than 1,500 Chechen refugee children and local students.  Most of the classrooms lack electricity and the stoves are used to heat them. The delivery came just prior to a heavy snowfall.
