IRC STATEMENT: International Rescue Committee Mourns Killing of Aid Worker in Chad |
N'djamena, Chad 02 May 2008 - The International Rescue Committee is deeply saddened and alarmed by the killing of humanitarian aid worker Pascal Marlinge in Chad on May 1, 2008.
His death is not only a tragic loss to his family, his colleagues at Save the Children UK and the entire aid community, but also to the vulnerable people he aimed to help in Chad.
This terrible incident underscores the precarious security conditions in which humanitarian aid groups operate and refugees and Chadians live in the region, as well as the urgent need to increase protection for all civilians there.
The International Rescue Committee provides lifesaving humanitarian aid to some 800,000 vulnerable people in the Darfur region, including 28,000 refugees at an IRC-managed camp in eastern Chad.
