IRC Aids Earthquake Victims in Congo

06 Feb 2008 - The International Rescue Committee is responding to an earthquake that struck Africa’s Great Lakes region on Sunday. The quake killed at least 44 people and left thousands of people homeless in eastern Congo. From its office in Bukavu, the IRC is distributing first aid including plastic sheeting, blankets and mats to some 5,000 affected people. IRC teams are also assessing damage to schools and water systems in the quake zone.

“In addition, we are distributing high protein biscuits to city hospitals treating the many injured,” said Sergio Trevisa, the IRC’s provincial director in South Kivu.

The quake shook South Kivu province with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale. Aftershocks were felt a day after the quake.

“All IRC staff are safe, although some reported damage to their houses,” Trevisian said.
