Teachers Complete Field Assignments with the IRC |
12 Sep 2007 - Four New York City public school teachers recently completed six-week field assignments with the International Rescue Committee. The four were winners of this year’s IRC Sandy Feldman Fellowships for Service through Education.
The Dallas, Phoenix and San Diego resettlement offices and the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya each hosted a fellow.
One of the fellows, Annique Leman, described her assignment in Kakuma as a “very rich and rewarding experience.”
“I would gladly return to a camp setting in the future to assist teachers develop curriculum and learn new teaching methodologies,” she said.
The fellowships, which enable teachers to spend their summer vacation working with the IRC in the U.S. or abroad, are funded by the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) in memory of Feldman, a former UFT president who was an IRC board member for 15 years prior to her death in 2005. The first group of fellows worked in the field last summer.
Among other things, the fellows spent their time in the field creating curricula, conducting teacher surveys, and classroom observations, and hosting training sessions with teachers and headmasters.
