The International Rescue Committee participates in the federally funded Matching Grant Program, an initiative to help new refugees in the United States achieve early self-sufficiency.
This is accomplished through a combination of financial support, intensive job search activities, expanded English courses and other assistance that is provided to newly arrived refugee families in their first four to six months in the United States. Refugees from all corners of the world have often said that attaining self-sufficiency was one of the most important steps in helping them feel at home in their new country.
They are provided comprehensive job search and placement services, Vocational English as a Second Language classes, and financial assistance.
The Matching Grant program requires a "match" in volunteer time, in-kind donations, and cash to match the federal governments contribution. Every dollar in cash or in-kind contributions of goods or volunteer services generates two dollars in federal matching resources. These resources are then used to provide housing for newly arrived refugees or to buy clothing for refugee children. This allows people in the community to get involved with Matching Grant clients as tutors and mentors or as contributors to the program through donations of in-kind goods or cash.
