Reception and Placement Services

Through the Reception and Placement (R&P) Program, IRC New York provides initial resettlement services for newly arrived refugees. IRC Caseworkers are at the heart of the R & P program. Caseworkers secure affordable, safe housing for their clients and arrange for the furniture and household necessities such as food, cooking supplies, and cleaning materials that await their clients when they arrive in their new homes.

After caseworkers greet their clients at the airport they orient their clients to new communities and cultures, helping them shop for groceries, navigate public transportation, set up bank accounts, make medical appointments, and apply for identification cards. Caseworkers enroll refugee children in local public schools, arrange English language training, and assist with employment services. The R & P Program is funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration and is supplemented by private donations and grants.
