From 1998 to 2000, Ethiopia and Eritrea fought a bloody war killing thousands and displacing over 600,000 people from the border areas. Ethiopia, a country afflicted by harsh climate, has struggled to cope not only with Eritrean refugees but also Sudanese fleeing civil war, and Somalians waiting for better conditions to return home.
How We Help
The IRC continues to expand our work with some 225,000 drought-affected Ethiopians and 45,000 Sudanese, Eritrean and Somali refugees in four refugee camps by providing water and sanitation, education and HIV/AIDS and reproductive health services. Our activities indirectly aid another 890,000 people.
