Bequests to the IRC
Bequests are a meaningful gift to make to the IRC. By remembering the IRC in your will, you leave a testimony to your commitment to help refugees for years to come. And, you help to assure the IRC's future ability to respond to refugee crises with the determination, ingenuity, and effectiveness that have characterized its long and distinguished history.
There are many ways to incorporate a bequest to the IRC into your overall estate plans:
- - You can leave a set dollar amount.
- - You can leave a particular asset, such as securities, real estate, or retirement plans.
- - You can leave a percentage of your estate or of the residual estate after providing for family members or friends.
Your bequest would be completely deductible for estate tax purposes, which can substantially reduce your estate taxes and taxes that loved ones would have to pay on the portion of your estate that they receive.
Contingent designations You can also name the IRC a contingent beneficiary of a portion of your estate, in case your named beneficiary does not survive you.
Legal Designation for the IRC When your attorney draws up your will, the IRC should be designated as:
"International Rescue Committee, Inc., a nonprofit institution incorporated in the State of New York, with business address of 122 East 42nd Street, New York, New York 10168-1289."
The IRC's Tax Identification Number (TIN) is 13-5660870.
Sample Language The following is sample language that you and your attorney can use in your will.
1) I give, devise, and bequeath [the remainder$$ or XX%] of my net estate to the International Rescue Committee, a non-profit institution incorporated in the State of New York, and with business address of 122 East 42nd Street, New York, New York 10168-1289".
2) "I give and bequeath the sum of [XXX] dollars ($XXX) to the International Rescue Committee . . . ;" or
3) “I give, devise and bequeath the total of/sum of $XXX dollars/ XX% of my net estate [or specific asset, such as real estate or stocks] to the International Rescue Committee, Inc . . ."
