Congress may have been in recess, but two prestigious organizations used the dog days of summer to call attention to the tragic flooding in Pakistan and to appeal for greater amounts of relief aid. IRC leaders participated in both discussions and both were well-attended, despite summer usually being a quiet time in New York and Washington. more »

When Albert Mbanfu fled Cameroon and found political asylum in the United States in 2005, he soon found work with the IRC's Atlanta office. His new job was not aiding refugees from war-torn countries, however, but helping people from the Gulf Coast who had lost their homes to Hurricane Katrina relocate to Atlanta and find work. He spoke with me last week about his experience as "a displaced person helping displaced people." more »

Fleeing persecution, her refugee Ethiopian family was resettled 20 years ago in Georgia by the IRC. Today Naima Abdullahi, an employment specialist with the IRC’s Atlanta office, wants to be sure her American born son Teso, 12, understands his family’s origins. more »

Elhamija Kadic fled war and persecution in Bosnia in 1992 and came to the United States with the help of the IRC. Today she works for the IRC in Atlanta helping other refugees from war-torn countries. When Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in 2005, she helped coordinate the IRC's response. She spoke with me last week about that experience. more »

The Mae Tao clinic, on the outskirts of the town of Mae Sot in northeastern Thailand, is the only source of medical care for thousands of Burmese along the volatile Thailand-Myanmar border. I visited the Mae Tao clinic this spring and took these photos. more »

Photographer Jim Stawniak was on hand in fall 2005 when two families who lost homes to Hurricane Katrina -- Lola Freeman's from New Orleans and Vu Lam's from Biloxi, Mississippi -- moved into the new apartments the IRC found for them in Atlanta. more »

One year ago the Pakistani military launched an offensive to drive Taliban militants from Pakistan’s Swat Valley. More than two million people fled the fighting, provoking a massive humanitarian crisis. Now, the worst floods in Pakistan’s history have created even greater destruction and displacement. more »

Here are some photos I took in the southernmost province of Sindh, where people continue to stream into urban centers and camps as the flood water rises. An estimated 3.6 million people have been made homeless by the deluge in Sindh province alone. more »
