When the West was still wild people wrote signs proclaiming they had "Gone to Texas." Even then Texas was a good place for new beginnings, renewed stability and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. This is exactly the opportunity the IRC Dallas regional office offers refugees.
In the process of building a new life we help refugees and asylees make a smooth transition to life in the United States. We encourage them to become contributing members of the community and to build a foundation for self–sufficiency. Through our interaction and guidance we introduce them to Texan warmth and friendliness.
1975 marked the opening of the International Rescue Committee office in Dallas, Texas. The Dallas office resettles approximately 500 refugees and asylees per year and works to integrate new arrivals into the Dallas population. During its three decades of service IRC-Dallas staff and volunteers have assisted refugees with obtaining housing, English language training, health care, and employment. Working together with volunteers and partner agencies we achieve our overall goal of refugee and asylee self-sufficiency within a few short months of arrival.
Diaper Drive
The IRC requests your help in collecting new diapers for refugee clients. Recently there has been an increase in the request for diapers, strollers, and various other baby necessities. Diapers are an expensive need that some refugees are struggling to meet. We would appreciate your community connections to help collect diapers for clients.
How to host a drive: -Call your co-workers, church group members, book club members, moms' group members, summer school class, aerobics class members, friends, golf buddies, etc. to action by requesting them to purchase one pack of diapers to support refugees in Dallas. -Set a deadline date that all diapers must be collected by. -Collect the diapers and drop them off at the IRC office, Monday - Friday between 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. -For materials to promote your drive or to request a delivery pick-up contact Robin Al-haddad, AmeriCorps*VISTA Outreach Coordinator (phone: 214-461-9781 extension 17, Robin.Al-haddad@theIRC.org).
