Since its opening in July 1999, the IRC's office in Baltimore has expanded its capabilities to become one of the leading resettlement agencies, resettling approximately 300 refugees and asylees each year in the metropolitan area. The overall goal of the IRC's Baltimore resettlement services is to assist refugees to achieve self-sufficiency through coordinated case management, employment and resource development services.
The foundation for the IRC in Baltimore's mission is close staff teamwork focused on helping refugees regain control of their lives while enabling them to participate in their American communities and maintain their rich cultural heritage. The agency is authorized by the U.S. Department of State to resettle refugees in six Maryland counties. The majority of IRC Baltimore's services are provided in Baltimore City and Howard County.
The IRC's Baltimore office is located at the Baltimore Resettlement Center (BRC), a unique national model for refugee resettlement. The BRC is the result of an initiative of the Maryland Office for New Americans (MONA), in cooperation with the Baltimore City Department of Social Services and four national voluntary agencies that resettle refugees throughout the United States: International Rescue Committee, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, Church World Service, and Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society. The BRC also houses representatives from three other local non-profit organizations: Lutheran Social Services of the National Capitol Area, Baltimore Medical System, and Baltimore City Community College. The BRC provides refugees a unique opportunity to receive comprehensive resettlement services at one location during their transition.
